about

The Bike's first release since 2017 is a salty piece of 'croft rock' with psych tendencies: a tall tale of mermaids, driftnets and peat smoke.

lyrics

I swear I saw a mermaid
Lying on the rocks
She was glistening in the sunlight
And smiling at the croft
I didn’t want to scare her
But I wanted to get close
So I crept along the reed bed
And hid behind the boat

Shiver me timber
Loosen the rocks
Who’s that smiling
At the croft?

Up popped a grey seal
He took a lazy view
He was listening to Jazz
On Radio Two
I say ‘Pump up the volume
I wanna listen to the groove
But don’t scare the mermaid
I think she likes the Blues’

Shiver me timber
Loosen the rocks
Who’s that smiling
At the croft?

In comes an eagle
She circles round the bay
So we turn our heads skyward
to hear what she will say

In comes a poacher
With a driftnet in his sack
He says ‘I’ll split the salmon
If you take up the slack’
Then the mist came in
I couldn’t see what happened next
But it’s well after midnight
And nobody has left

Shiver me timber
Loosen the rocks
What’s that cooking
At the croft?
Shiver me timber
Loosen the rocks
What’s that cooking
At the croft?

Shiver me timber
Loosen the rocks
We’re all smiling
At the croft?

The moral of this story
The moral of the tale
If you can smell peat smoke
Don’t inhale
